Almond Grove B&B, Accommodation in Strathalbyn, SA
Almond Grove provides self-contained accommodation with an Oriental theme, set in the property of your hosts, David Bunton and Helen Stacey Bunton.
‘a garden studio apartment with an Oriental theme’
17 Harriet Street, Strathalbyn, South Australia 5255
The property includes Helen’s studio and art gallery. Strathalbyn was the second country town surveyed in the state, and Almond Grove is situated off North Parade in an area of narrow lanes and original stone workers’ cottages that used to be known as ‘Old Strathalbyn’.
David and Helen have many connections with Asia. David spent over 40 years of his life in China and Hong Kong, mostly in education, and speaks Cantonese and some Mandarin. The Chinese word for ‘almond’ includes the character for ‘kindness’ and sums up our intention with Almond Grove. The accommodation has an ensuite bathroom, walk-in robe, kitchenette, dining and lounge space and is enlivened by furniture and treasures old and new from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia and Sarawak. Colour harmonies are inspired by a giant hand-painted fan of bamboo and cherry blossom, set against a fuchsia-coloured wall, over the king-size bed. This bed can be converted to two singles. On your arrival look out upon the garden and from your own patio enjoy the meditative quiet, while partaking in complimentary drinks and refreshments.
Generous provisions ensure that guests can make a delicious continental breakfast.
Guests are welcome to explore the gallery. Helen has held numerous exhibitions interstate and overseas since the late 1980s. You may like to sign up for a personal drawing, painting or silk painting demonstration or workshop.
There are numerous attractions close at hand. A ten minute walk will take you to historic High Street with antique shops, cafes, hotels, the Kenny Blake motorcycle sculpture and an outstanding motor museum. Fifteen minutes walk down Commercial Road brings you past the Chapel Theatre, the modern library and heated swimming pool, the central town gardens around the Angas River, and on to hotels, shops, cafes, a pharmacy, a supermarket and the Visitor Information Centre. Those who love art will enjoy visiting the nine art studios or galleries listed in the ‘Strathalbyn Art’ brochure. The Strathalbyn region is known for its diversity of agriculture, from dairy, sheep and cattle farming to boutique farms with farm gate produce and wineries at Langhorne Creek. Its proximity to Lake Alexandrina and the River Murray, the South Coast and Coorong, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale ensures rich experiences for visitors.
We do enjoy meeting our guests on arrival over a country-style morning or afternoon tea under our patio. One of our first guests remarked, “I think I’ve died and gone to heaven!”
